Tunisia, Economics, 9/26/1998
Tunisia expressed its hope the Euro (the European United currency) - which is expected to come into being next January - could support and enhance its economy, where the volume of trade with European union is 75% of its total trade.
The Tunisian minister of finance Mohamed El-Hairi said - in a symposium on the effects of Euro - it is Tunisia's hope that the Euro becomes an international currency, adding that it is inevitable that the Euro will bring a more balance to exchange rates, and this will benefit Tunisia.
The governor of the Tunisian central bank Mohammed Baji said that the Tunisian dinar will not only be linked only to the Euro but the dinar will continue to be flexible and its value determined through the main commercial trader groups in Tunisia.
An official in the economic studies sector at the French bank National Dobari said that one of the side effects resulting from the Euro on Tunisia is a higher growth rate and more stability to the Tunisian dinar. This was the third symposium regulated by Tunisian banks during this week to prepare up for the Euro.
