Armed groups kill five civilians in Algeria
Algeria, Local, 9/25/1998
The Algerian Armed Islamic Group (GIA) on Wednesday killed five civilians at a false roadblock near al-Afroun on the road linking Wahran to the capital Algiers.
The Algerian daily al-Khabar said Thursday that a bomb exploded when a truck passed by in the suburbs of Qadil city, in eastern Wahran. The explosion wounded two citizens.
The paper said the army and security forces are carrying out vast mopping-up operations in the woods of al-Osh, Bin Tarif, and Sedi Mubarak in Saeeda province. During its three-day mopping up operation these security forces destroyed GIA shelters.
Meanwhile, the Algerian daily al-Chaab reported that former Algerian Prime Minister Abdul Salaam Bal'eed will nominate himself in the new presidential elections scheduled to be held in the middle of February, 1999.
Bal'eed was a prominent figure in the era of the late Algerian President Hawarri Bu Medyan. He tried to pursue the policy of "war economics" in order to eliminate the economic crisis that hit the country when he assumed the Cabinet's leadership in the 1990s.
