Irish defense minister regrets killing of civilians in South Lebanon
Lebanon, Politics, 9/25/1998

Ireland defense Minister Michael Smith has expressed sadness over the killing of civilians in the massacre committed by the Israeli occupation forces in Qana, Southern Lebanon. After the Irish minister inspected, Thursday, the headquarters of Fiji's unit working within UNIFIL, where the Israeli carnage took place, he said "one feels sorry before those martyrs." He added he hopes that martyrdom of those Lebanese civilians will be an impetus to give the Middle East peace process a push forward.

In remembrance of the event, in Paris, the French daily Liberation said Thursday that Antoine Lahd who leads a mercenary army, in charge of supporting the Israeli army which occupies South Lebanon since 1982, is the person most hated in Lebanon. The paper wrote a full page about the recently released Lebanese militant heroine Suha Beshara who tried to assassinate Antoine Lahd. The paper noted that Beshara has become the heroine of all Lebanese after her release.
