Djerjian warns against stalemate on Syrian - Israeli track
Regional-USA, Politics, 9/25/1998
Former US Undersecretary of State for Near East Affairs Edward Djerjian said that the deadlocked negotiations on the Lebanese -Israeli and Syrian - Israeli tracks create a "grave situation" which always provokes the expectation the situation could change into a military confrontation.
Djerjian's statements were made at the Foreign Press Center in Washington when he announced the study on the Syrian-Israeli track. Djerjian supervises this study being the director of the James Baker Institute for Public Policy, in Texas.
Djerjian added that the "stalemate" in negotiations on the Syrian-Israeli track as media interest on this track has diminished is a matter which raises concern. He said that Israel and Syria represent two important military forces in the Middle East, indicating Israel's military supremacy, but noting that Syria is an "important military player."
He added that Syria enjoys a regional and political role. He continued that both Syria and Lebanon are at the "heart of the geopolitical strategy for the peace equilibrium."
