El-Baz warns of Israel ownership of nuclear weapons

At a symposium at the Egyptian Opera House on "Issues of Egyptian - Arab national security within international variables and Arab - Israeli strife," President Mubarak's political advisor, Osama El-Baz stated yesterday evening that Israel's ownership of nuclear weapons is an untenable situation because it forms a disturbance and a break in the regional balance of power, resulting in invasions and threatening peace.

He also stated that the Egyptian project to clear the region of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, has attracted great attention after the nuclear tests conducted by India and Pakistan.

In order to confront the Israeli nuclear weapons, El-Baz raised a number of possibilities, such as the Arab states seeking to possess nuclear weapons, pointing out that the cost of this alternative make it less desirable than the probability of imposing economic sanctions on Israel.

Another possibility El-Baz suggested is that Israel can abandon its program in the future by convincing it of the high cost of this program, as well as of the possibility that the Arabs could come to possess nuclear weapons.
