Mediterranean parliament leaders call for clearing region of nuclear weapons
Regional, Politics, 9/21/1998

The leaders of parliamentary councils in Tunisia, Italy, Spain and Egypt called for activating Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the region.

At the conclusion of their meeting in Tunisia, the leaders of the deputy councils of those countries, issued a concluding statement for the symposium of parliament leaders in the Euro-Mediterranean Barcelona process, held in Palermo, Italy, which did not issue a statement because of different points of view between the participating delegations.

The statement was signed by the Tunisian, Spanish, Italian, and Egyptian representatives.

The statement called for the participation of all Mediterranean parliaments without exception in the European parliamentary talks, referring to excluding Libya, Bosnia, Albania, and Yugoslavia from the previous symposiums.

At the end, the statement confirmed the necessity of removing nuclear weapons from the Mediterranean countries and the Middle East.
