Morocco-USA, Politics, 9/17/1998

U.S. Congressman, Michael Collins, Republican Representative of Georgia and member of several committees at the House of Representatives, said his visit last August in Morocco allowed him to find out how relations between Morocco and the U.S.A. are "rich in historic moments."

In a statement to MAP, the Congressman recalled the centuries-old bonds of friendship and cooperation existing between the two countries since the foundation of the United States.

Collins added that in addition to Rabat, he also visited Marrakesh, the city where the American Republic signed in 1786 its first treaty ever concluded with another nation that is still in force.

The Congressman, who visited Morocco for the second time in less than two years, said he keeps good memories of his stay, stressing that the audience granted by the H.M. king Hassan II to the delegation, led by Congressman Harold Rogers, took place in an agreeable atmosphere full of kind solicitude on the pat of the king.

During the meeting, the Congressmen found out the interest that H.M. the king grants to the promotion of trade relations with the United States, he added, noting the importance that the king pays to a particular project, that of establishing a pole of economic and trade exchanges at the level of North African countries.

Regarding the Sahara issue, the Congressman said he "learnt a lot" during the meeting that he described as "very enlightening."

The Congressman also hailed the efforts made by U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Edward Gabriel and the action he has been undertaking since his appointment in Rabat with "a special dedication" to consolidating ties between the two countries.

During their stay in Rabat, the Congress delegation also called on the members of the American Embassy and the staff of the US Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D) with whom they enquired about various bilateral exchange projects, noted the American Representatives, paying tribute to the work accomplished by the American representations in Morocco to intensify the flow of exchanges between the two countries.
