Fact-finding UN committee on Algeria issues report, human rights and economy addressed
Algeria, Politics, 9/15/1998

The United Nations fact-finding commission that visited Algeria during July called in its report delivered to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for international efforts to help Algeria combat terrorism.

Moreover the committee called on the Algerian government to take procedures for enhancing democracy, respecting human rights and adjusting the performance of governmental security bodies and army.

In its report, the committee confirmed the necessity of taking reform procedures, including enhancing the Algerian economy by accelerating the public sector privatization program and allocating income for treating social problems, such as poverty and unemployment.

The Algerian government will receive today the report of the delegation that recently visited Algeria. Diplomatic sources confirmed that the commission's head, former Portuguese President Mario Soares, presented the committee's report to the UN secretary-general last Thursday, after the committee members unanimously approved its final content.

The sources said that Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid was informed of the report's contents.

The report recommended final methods and a mechanism for creating a program for cooperation and solidarity with Algeria seeking to treat problems. The report also stressed the necessity of supporting Algeria during its economic problems and warned that the deterioration of the situation in Algeria would have a negative effect on the Mediterranean, Europe and the international community.

The committee said that Algerian society is able to express its political will within the context of legislation.
