Arab League has no comments about Libyan decision to cancel Ministry of Arab Unity

The Arab league said Libya's decision to disband its Ministry of Arab Unity taken by its minister Juma Fazani is a decision of its own, and there is nothing to be discussed in this matter.

Libya just canceled its Arab Unity efforts because it did not see Arab support for breaking the UN imposed sanctions against Libya. Libya wanted the Arab states to ignore these sanctions as has some of the African countries done.

Fazani, Libya's secretary of the public committee for unity, met this morning with Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid. He will also head Libya's delegation in the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers that will begin tomorrow under the chairmanship of Naser Kadoura, the Syrian minister of state for foreign affairs.

Meanwhile, Wageh Hamdi, the Egyptian assistant foreign minister and Egypt's permanent delegate to the Arab League, described the United Nations Security Council's last resolution on the Lockerbie case as irrational because it has created problems for the effort to bring the Libyan suspects to trial and because trial arrangements should have been agreed upon before issuing the resolution.

He denied the existence of any dispute between Libya and the Arab League concerning the developments surrounding the Lockerbie issue.

Hamdi said there are permanent communications among Arab League members, Libya and the U.S. and British embassies to solve the current problems.
