Libya is upset and cancels Arab unity secretariat
Libya, Politics, 9/14/1998
The Libyan news agency JANA reported that Tripoli decided on Sunday to cancel the "Arab unity secretariat" in compliance with its "affiliation to the African continent."
The agency added that the last mission to be carried out by the Libyan secretary of Arab unity, Juma al-Fazzani, will be to attend "meetings of the Arab foreign ministers due to be held in Cairo next week."
The agency elaborated the decision to cancel the secretariat, established more than five years ago, "will be taken during the coming session of the Libyan's people's general conference."
In a speech he delivered on September 5, Libyan President Moammar Gaddafi praised the courage of the African presidents who defied the air embargo imposed by the UN against Libya. They arrived in Tripoli by air in implementation of a decision taken by the Organization of African Unity in this respect in June.
Gaddafi, on the other hand, blamed the Arab states for abiding by the embargo imposed on his country since 1992.
