Egypt and Lebanon sign 3 agreements for free trade zone
Egypt-Lebanon, Economics, 9/11/1998
Egypt and Lebanon agreed yesterday to establish a free trade zone between the two states. At the conclusion of the Egyptian - Lebanese joint committee meetings in Cairo, the sides signed three agreements relating to the unification of standards, cooperation in the field marine transport and the establishment of a free trade zone.
Meeting with the Egyptian and Lebanese businessmen, Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri said that economic relations are still not at the desired level as the volume of trade exchange between them doesn't exceed $90 million dollars.
A statement issued at the conclusion of the meetings said the actions and behavior of the Israeli government confirm its insistence on destroying the peace process. The statement also called for Arab cooperation to confront the current situation, and the two countries stressed their intent to continue efforts to increase and double the volume of trade exchange to reach a level that can reflect the political relations between them.
