Egypt, Local, 9/11/1998

Cairo announced the establishment of a center for combating mines, and to remove more than 23 million mines planted in Egypt.

The executive manager of the center, Ayman Serour, told ArabicNews.com that such a center constitutes the first civilian attempt in the region to combat the danger of mines and prevent their use and manufacture.

Moreover the center will observe the areas where mines are planted in Egypt, to warn the inhabitants to avoid them and arrange for international, regional and domestic campaigns in cooperation with the international organizations for clearing the regions.

690 Egyptian citizens have been killed and another 7,615 injured due to mines buried in the Egyptian territories, specifically in the border regions. Most recently, a mine was exploded on the farm of Abdul Aati Hassan Sultan in Matrouh village in the western Sahara, while he was irrigating a garden of his own.
