The Israeli Jerusalem Post daily said today in its main headline that Turkey and Israel have decided to carry out in mid Sept. their first joint air maneuvers in Israel since the two sides signed a military cooperation agreement in 1996. Go

The UAE's Emirates airline said it is buying six Airbus A340-500 planes at a cost of $2.4 billion, Khaleej Times reported. Go

Qatar will be divided into 29 new electoral zones for upcoming municipal elections, 20 of them in Doha, Gulf Times reported. Go

US State Department spokesman James Rubin said that rival Kurdish leaders Masoud Barzani and Jalal Talibani will make separate trips to Washington in the next week. Rubin said the Kurdish Democratic Party's leader, Barzani, will be in the US from September 9-11, while Patriotic Union of Kurdistan leader Talibani will visit from September 14-16. Go

Aicha Belarbi, Morocco's Secretary of state to foreign affairs, is attending the Arab league economic ministerial council meeting to open works this Wednesday in Cairo. The Agenda of the two-day meeting includes assessment of the progress made in the setting up of a common Arab free-trade zone, the gradual customs duties suppression, inter-arab trade exchanges and investments. Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa announced Egypt's approval of a peace agreement between the conflicted parties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to ending their struggle and military operations. Go

Sudan asked Egypt to open the gates of the High Dam in Aswan to drain some of the surplus water of the Nile in Sudan. Sudanese sources said today that this request comes after 100,000 persons were effected in Sudan due to the floods of the Nile. Go

A poll in Israel showed that the majority of Israelis supports establishing an independent Palestinian state. The poll was conducted by Tel-Aviv university, and 53% of those who gave an opinion expressed their belief that they can live without fear with an independent Palestinian state. The referendum also revealed that 42% of Israelis support the Oslo agreement while it is opposed by only 30%, and 28% have no opinion. Go

Soliman Reda, the Egyptian minister of industry and mineral wealth, announced today that President Mubarak called for opening new markets for Egyptian products in the African Arab areas through ratifying agreements with some countries and giving advantages to Egyptian products in these countries' markets. Sources in the Anglican Church in Egypt said that a high-ranking delegation from the leadership from the Anglican church in the U.S.A. will pay a visit to Egypt on Friday to learn about the activities of the Egyptian church and fields of social service during their visit. Go

A study issued through the Egyptian Industries Union stated that the trade balance deficit between Egypt and the EU during the first half of the current year valued at $1 billion. Go

A member of the opposition Sudanese Democratic National Alliance's leadership, Dona Metwal, directed strong criticism at the leaders of the northern opposition parties and the leader of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, Colonel John Garang, accusing them of playing a political game to destroy Sudanese unity.
