Syria welcomes Jordan's refusal to join Turkish - Israeli military alliance
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 9/9/1998

The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas reported on Tuesday, quoting official Syrian sources, that Syria has welcomes statements made by Jordanian officials on Jordan's refusal to take part in the Israeli-Turkish military alliance.

The same sources urged Jordan not to confine itself to mere statements in this regard, especially as the Jordanian people, on many occasions, have deliberately refused such an alliance and any from of cooperation.

The sources elaborated that it seems that the Jordanian side had reached the conclusion, in light of talks held between chairman of the house of notables, Zeid al-Refai, with Syrian Vice-President Abdul Halim Khaddam in South Africa that Jordan's involvement into the Turkish-Israeli line would cause damage to Jordan more than any other Arab party.

The sources stated that perpetuating such an alliance would eventually lead to an opposition alliance comprising Syria, Iran, Lebanon and Iraq.
