Strengthening military relations between Jordan and Turkey
Jordan-Turkey, Military, 9/8/1998

Turkey's Prime Minister Mesout Yilmaz defended the military cooperation between his country and Israel.

In a press conference he held with his Jordanian counterpart Fayez Tarawneh in Amman on Sunday, Yilmaz said that his country's "military cooperation with Israel and the promotion of this cooperation, which also includes Jordan, will help the realization of stability in the region."

He added, "Turkey has the intention to participate in making peace and stability in the region." He described his country's relations with Jordan as developed with benefits which exceed the boundaries of the region.

The Jordanian minister who signed with the Turkish official three agreements on agriculture, trade and sport, said that the region is in need of security cooperation on the regional level, which had been proposed several days earlier by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu when he talked about the establishment of a military alliance between Israel, Turkey and Jordan in the context of what he called "the security system in the region."

Meanwhile, the Turkish ambassador in Amman, Suha Amre, said his country's relations with Jordan are developed to the stage that it can be said the two countries armies have "become one army."

Amre added that the two countries exchanged delegations of soldiers to be trained in the other country's territories. He added that the Jordanian pilots will carry out training sorties in their F-16 jet fighters in the Turkish airspace, adding that Turkish pilots will conduct similar sorties in Jordanian airspace.

"We are strengthening our bilateral relations with Jordan and we will do the same with Israel," Amre added.
