Report: New spy network in Lebanon
Lebanon, Politics, 9/7/1998
The Lebanese daily al-Deyar has asserted that a spy network was arrested in the southern area of Beirut. The report said the network supplies the Israeli Mossad in Cyprus with information.
In its Sunday edition the paper quoted well-informed sources as saying that more than 20 people dealing with Israel were arrested in the area. They include one woman.
The paper added that investigations continue in search of other members of the group which transfer information to the Israeli Mossad which takes Cyprus as a headquarters for monitoring the network.
The sources went on to explain that the first event which uncovered works of the said network was the arrest of the main agent who facilitated the Israeli assassination of Husam al-Amin, a Lebanese Amal movement official, just 10 days ago.
The paper indicated that the operation to investigate this spy network is considered the biggest following the discovery of the earlier spy network which included 77 members and operated in several parts of the Lebanese territories.
The sources spoke of continuing investigations to uncover new circles in this critical security issue.
