Solidarity with Yemeni journalist voiced
Yemen-Palestine, Politics, 9/7/1998
The Yemeni organization in defense of human rights and democratic freedoms expressed solidarity with journalist and chief editor of the Yemeni satirical daily "Sum Bum " (Dumb and Deaf), Issam Saeed Salem, who has been exposed to a hostile campaign launched by the Palestinian ambassador in Sanaa.
According to a report by the said paper, the Palestinian ambassador was accused of taking part in smuggling Uranium and red mercury to Israel. The Palestinian ambassador emphatically denied the report and accused the paper of negligence and sloppy reporting.
In a statement, the organization said the Yemeni journalist has been summoned by the Palestinian ambassador in Sanaa, who held press conferences and made statements in several dailies in which he violated democratic norms, the press law and the freedom of opinion.
The statement added, "If the ambassador honors the freedom of the press, he would have used this right in replying to what had been said in the Sum Bum daily about the raised issue.
