Mediterranean forum: Involving civil society in economic development of the region

Works of the second Mediterranean Forum for development started deliberations in Marrakesh, southern Morocco. Some 400 experts from the Middle East and North Africa will discuss means of involving civil society in the economic development of the region.
The forum was opened by the son of the Moroccan king, Prince Moulay Rachid and chairman of the World Bank James Wolfenson who said: "We are concerned with health, education and other social issues." He added, "We will work for a partnership with other international institutions and other representatives of civil society."
The Forum, organized by the Moroccan government in collaboration with the World Bank, embarks on one main theme bearing the title "Partnership and development." WB official for the Middle East and North Africa Kamal Darwish said "Even if there are ministers taking part in the Forum, yet it is not a political meeting."
The Forum's first session was held in May 1997, also in Marrakesh. The current session wil run through September 6.
