Lebanese Heroine Suha Beshara released after 10 years in prison
Lebanon, Politics, 9/4/1998

The Israeli occupation forces on Thursday released Lebanese militant Suha Beshara after being held for 10 years in Khiam prison for trying to assassinate the leader of the Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army, Antoine Lahd.

Beshara was delivered by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and she was taken to the free zone of south Lebanon through Bater Jezzine.

Lahd was seriously wounded in the attempt and Beshara was held in Khiam prison until she was released Thursday. Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri said that Lebanon is exerting all efforts to free all Lebanese detainees and prisoners in Israeli prisons. He added that no preconditions were set for Beshara's release.

Hariri went on to explain that French President Jacques Chirac and the French government played a role in securing Beshara's release. Hariri added that Lebanon was careful to carry out the release operation in secret. He at the same time denied that any deal made to set free Beshara. He stressed, "There are no deals of the sort."

Hariri received Beshara, who stressed that the Lebanese resistance is the only way to liberate all Lebanese territories in the south and in the western Bekaa. She extended her greetings to the martyrs of the Lebanese resistance. "The martyr is the minaret which we always inspire."

She stressed that she will continue resistance against the Israeli occupation. She also extended thanks to all those who helped win her release and who are following up the question of prisoners and detainees in the Israeli jails, including Lebanese officials, the Red Cross, all humanitarian organizations and commissions, the Lebanese committee in charge of supporting detainees and the mass media.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Minister of State for Parliament Affairs Beshara Murhij on Thursday called upon the international community to pressure Israel to abide by UN resolutions. He welcomed Beshara's release and called upon her to carry on her struggle. He said that by being set free from the Israeli jail, a new phase will be marked in her life.
