European parliament calls for lifting sanctions on Libya
Libya-European Union, Politics, 9/4/1998
The US Senate urged Libya to send its two citizens suspected of being involved in the 1988 Lockerbie jet explosion to Holland to be tried before Scottish judges.
The US Senate expressed support on Wednesday for the decision taken by the US not to negotiate with Libya about the US and British proposals providing for holding the trial in Holland according to the Scottish law.
While Congress called upon the US for a tougher stand, disputes emerged between the European parliament and the European commission on the need to lift the sanctions imposed on Libya.
The British daily the Guardian said that the European Parliament demands the lifting of sanctions imposed on Libya after it agrees for its two citizens to be tried before a neutral court, whereas the European commission is persistent that Libya has to deliver the two men before thinking of lifting sanctions imposed on it.
A plenary meeting will be held for the defense commission for the two Libyans. It will be held in Tripoli within the few coming days. It comprises high-ranking lawyers from Egypt, the US, Scotland, Britain, Holland, Germany and Malta, in addition to an Arab and African work group including several consultants.
During its three-day deliberation, the defense commission will discuss studies submitted on the Scottish criminal law measures. The commission will also discuss amendments proposed to be made on the Dutch law and study the draft trial in a neutral country according to the UN Security Council decision in this regard.
The commission will, moreover, discuss guarantees to be ensured for carrying out a just trial for the two.
