Yemeni oil workers observe a strike
Yemen, Local, 9/3/1998

A trade union source said that the Yemeni authorities had arrested four workers from the US "Hunt Oil" company over their calling for a general strike carried out on Tuesday.

Strikes are not forbidden in Yemen.

The source, from company's workers' trade union who refrained from being identified, added that the strike carried out by 1,300 workers in the refineries of the Hunt Oil company "was observed following the failure of series of negotiations with the company's board for improving salaries."

Since 1986 the Hunt Oil company has been investing oil in Maareb oil fields, 270 km to the east of Sanaa. The company's daily production is estimated between 160,000 to 195,000 barrels, MENA reported.
