AL delegation to arrive in Libya on Lockerbie crisis
Libya-Regional, Politics, 9/3/1998

A delegation representing the Arab League will arrive in Tripoli today. It comprises the AL chief assistant secretaries, and chairman of his office.

The visit aims at reaching an acceptable formula agreed upon by Libya and the AL concerning the Arab-proposed solution for settling Lockerbie crisis. Libya's permanent representative to the AL, Salma Rashid said in press statements that the formula will be submitted to AL chief Esmat Abdul Meguid. By his turn, AL chief will submit the formula to the Arab foreign ministers for approval.

This, however, will be an expression of the united Arab position concerning Lockerbie developments. She indicated that the AL delegation will meet with several Libyan officials to crystallize this formula. On the draft project proposed by Libya to lift the sanctions and not to abide by sanctions, Rashid said following her meeting with the AL chief that Libya's demands are legal and legitimate.

She hoped the "Arab brothers" will support the Libyan position. She added that Libya is part of the Arab nation. It is not alone in confronting the two sides of the crisis, rather backed by the AL, the Organization of the African Unity, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non Aligned Movement. She said the Libyan plan intends to reach a mechanism in light of the decision of the UN Security Council, so as to achieve a breakthrough in Lockerbie case, to maintain a fair trial and lift the sanctions imposed on Libya.

Rashid said she does not expect escalation by the US and Britain, but a positive development to take place with these two countries. She noted that the AL chief informed her of explanations and inquiries he requested from the ambassadors of Britain and the US to Egypt, "The AL has not yet received answers from Britain and the US."
