Jordanian circles: Wadi Araba failed to win popular support in Jordan
Jordan-Israel, Economics, 9/3/1998

Former Jordanian Information Minister Ibrahim Ezzeddine stressed that the Wadi Araba treaty between the Jordanian government and Israel has failed to win over the Jordanian people.

In a statement to the Jordanian weekly al-Sabil, the former Jordanian minister explained that usually treaties result in relations and contacts, but Wadi Araba treaty did not achieve anything of the sort on the people's level in Jordan.

Ezzeddine adked how any Arab side can establish stable and natural relations with Israel as long as it continues building settlements in occupied Arab territories, in expelling Palestinians and refusing to withdraw from the Golan and south Lebanon.

He said there are contacts between officials in Jordan with Israel, adding that the Jordanian people do not want to establish relations with Israel and refuse normalization with it.

The paper said in another report that Jordan asked Israel to increase the number of weekly air flights between Amman and Tel Aviv from six to 10 flights. The paper quoted well-informed sources as saying that this request came because Israel is not implementing the agreement signed with the Jordanian side in this respect. The paper indicated Jordan's wish to increase normalization with Israel.
