Morocco injects more than $1 million into Jerusalem Fund
Morocco-Palestine, Economics, 9/2/1998
The Jerusalem Fund (Bait Al-Mal Al-Quds) obtained more than $1 million (10.007 million dirhams) in a donation to support this institution.
The support operation, conducted by the Moroccan Airports Office "ONDA," is part of Morocco's efforts to support the Palestinian people's struggle in conformity with the king's call for solidarity with the holy city of Jerusalem, said the Moroccan minister of transport and merchant navy.
The funds were raised from private and institutional donors and from receipts of performances in 1997 by famous Egyptian actor Adel Imam.
The Jerusalem Fund was set up to counteract Israel's efforts to obliterate the Arab and Islamic characteristics of the city.
Local authorities from Casablanca and Fes announced plans to inject to the fund $114,500.
Palestinian ambassador in Morocco, Abu Marouane, who was appointed by King Hassan II general manager of the fund last July during the 17th session of the Jeruslem Committee held in Casablanca, said this first support operation is a contribution to safeguarding the Islamic legacy. He added that ONDA's action to build an airport in Gaza is a Moroccan-Palestinian monument that was erected despite Israel's attempts to foil the project.
Chairman of the Moroccan association supporting the Palestinian people's struggle stressed the importance of the fund in raising funds to save the city from the judaization hazards. The association also called Moroccans to contribute a work day to the fund.
