Israel wound Lebanese civilian, rebuked by monitoring group
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 9/2/1998

One Lebanese civilian was wounded as a result of the Israeli bombardment of the Lebanese towns of Mashghara and Ein al-Tineh in occupied south Lebanon on Tuesday.

This latest Lebanese civilian casualty came on the same day as Israel and its allies in Lebanon received a strong rebuke from the April Understanding Monitoring Committee for attacks injuring civilians. The group, made up of representatives from Lebanon, Israel, Syria, France and the United States, in its statement "condemned the accumulation of such incidents which create a grave situation and urged Israel and those cooperating with it to take more effective measures to prevent their repetition, since under no circumstances should civilians be the target of such attacks."

The Monitoring Group also condemned the Lebanese Katyusha attacks on Northern Israel that followed the Israeli assassination of an Amal leader inside Lebanon and the wounding on the same day of several Lebanese civilians. The group also called on both sides to avoid the recurrence of incidents endangering civilians.

Lebanese security sources said the Israeli bombardment also targeted the hills of al-Jabbour and Abu Rashid. The sources added that the bombardment resulted in inflicting damage on several houses and on an electricity station in Ein al-Tineh.

Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes also flew over several areas in south Lebanon carrying out provocative mock raids over al-Tuffah district and the western sector of occupied south Lebanon.

Pro-Israeli South Lebanon Army radio reported the Lebanese resistance attack against the Baseel area in occupied south Lebanon. The radio report added that at least one Israeli soldier was wounded in the attack.

Lebanese resistance forces attacked an Israeli position in Toumat Neiha and two Israeli backed Lahd's militias in Thaghara district in the occupied part of south Lebanon. Lebanese resistance sources said the attacks inflicted damages, as direct hits were achieved at Toumat Neiha position.

In the afternoon, the Israeli forces in the Teir Harfa and Ballat areas shelled al-Heina, Majdal Zoun, Zibqin and al-Butoum mountain areas. Lebanese security sources said that Israeli military helicopters carried out a wide mopping-up campaign using machine-guns to fire on the surroundings of Zibqin and al-Butoum mountain towns.
