Libya celebrates its 29th revolution anniversary
Libya, Politics, 9/1/1998
Libyans today celebrate the 29th anniversary of the launching of the al-Fateh revolution in September 1, 1969, when Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi along with a group of army officers toppled the constitutional monarchy of the then vacationing King Mohammad Idris al-Sanoussi in a bloodless revolution.
Libya has achieved high growth levels regarding the total economy, surpassing an average of 7.15%, thus pushing the share of the economic sectors, excluding oil, to represent more than 54.5% of the national gross product. The growth rates are estimated to have deteriorated significantly as a result of the UN imposed sanction since 1992.
Progress has been achieved in the agricultural sector. Almost two million hectares are farmed. The Industrial River Project was instigated and now it has a production capacity of 5.6 million cubic meters of irrigation and potable water, which is pumped from more than 980 wells.
In the oil sector, the Libyan government has steered its oil policy towards public service and general welfare as this is because that sector is considered to be the main income source for the country. The sectors of electricity, housing, utilities and transport also witnessed similar progress and development. The Libyan government has also paid special attention to education and higher education. Scientific research has also been underlined. Eleven universities were set up throughout the country, and eight research centers have been established.
In the health sector, Libya has constructed 103 hospitals, 40 clinics, 43 medical institutes, and two schools of medicine. Similar attention was given to the sectors of information, culture, internal and external trade, banking and insurance.
In the political field, the Libyan government has mapped out its foreign policy to serve on four tracks: the Arab regions, Africa, developing countries and major countries. Arab unity and the Palestinian issue have been among the major causes supported by Libya.
