Sanaa voice support for an Arab conference
Yemen-Regional, Politics, 8/31/1998
Sanaa on Saturday voiced support for convening an Arab conference to draw up a "strategic" plan to counter Israel and unify Arab states' ranks.
The Yemeni news agency Sabaa quoted the spokesman for the Yemeni Foreign Ministry as saying that Sanaa supports convening a "full" Arab conference in which all Arab states take part. This statement was in regard to Iraq, which was excluded from the recent Arab summit conference held in Cairo in 1996 because of its occupation of Kuwait in 1990.
The spokesman said, "Amid such crucial circumstances which threaten the will and dignity of the Arab nation, the Republic of Yemen supports the convening of a full Arab conference which works for laying a strategic plan to come up with the Israeli challenges."
The conference, the spokesman continued, has to work for restoring Arab reconciliation, building confidence among Arab states to strengthen their roles and strengthening the regional and international position of the Arab League."
