France to devote more focus on Maghreb countries
Maghreb-France, Politics, 8/28/1998
France has decided to devote more time and more energy to its relations with the Maghreb, said French foreign minister, Hubert Vedrine.
Vedrine who was addressing the 6th conference of France's ambassadors abroad surveyed his country's relations with Maghreban countries, pointing out that these relations are "harmonious" with Tunisia, and "even better than before" with Morocco since the change over of power and the appointment of the socialist-led coalition government.
As to relations with Algeria, Vedrine said unfortunately, France has no "miracle solution to speed up the end of the tragedy" nor does it have the means to impose such a solution. "We can however endeavor to maintain close relations for the future of France and of Algeria," the foreign minister said.
Regarding France's relations with Libya, Vedrine pointed out that the French policy consists in developing actions in fields that are not banned by the U.N. Security Council resolutions.
Concerning relations with other Arab states, Vedrine described them as "unchanging" and "friendly."
The 180 French ambassadors are debating during their three-day conference France's role in the world and in international conflicts.
