Amr Moussa in South Africa tonight, sees greater role for Non-Aligned Movement
Egypt-Non-Aligned Movement, Politics, 8/28/1998
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa is heading today to Durban, South Africa to head Egypt's delegation to the meetings of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement countries that will begin works on Sunday to prepare for the 12th summit of the NAM countries.
Moussa said the Non-Aligned Movement currently represents the third-world countries' political, economic and social demands, their efforts to establish security, and their positions toward disarmament, human rights, and countries' sovereignty, adding that the meetings will focus on the situation in Africa.
He expressed his hope that the NAM would move to catch up with international development and play its essential role as an equal partner in international relations, adding that Egypt was informed of an "adjusted" statement expected to be issued about the summit. He described it as a positive statement that will call for cooperation and coordination among the NAM countries to achieve the interest of the non alignment countries.
