Regional, Politics, 8/28/1998
The Arab Group at the United Nations is getting ready to make intensive diplomatic communications in an effort to make the Middle East a region free of nuclear weapons.
ArabicNews.com learned from Arab official sources that the Arab effort in coordination with "intimate countries", members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of African Unity and other organizations and similar coalitions will support a draft law by the General Assembly of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency for implementation of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East, through the 42nd session of the agency's conference which will start its works on September 21.
In a plenary session in October 1997, the IAEA called for a report presentation from the organization's director general at this year's conference to be entitled "Application of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East."
This project comes within the Arab - Egyptian initiative for clearing the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction.
