Tunisian president meets Qaddoumi, calls for peace efforts
Tunisia-Regional, Politics, 8/28/1998

Tunisian President Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali called upon the international community -- especially the Middle East peace process cosponsors and the European Union -- to move swiftly to salvage the Middle East peace process.

At the conclusion of a seminar for heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Tunis, President Bin Ali added that the international community has to force Israel to abide by peace so the Palestinian people can restore their legitimate rights and Syria and Lebanon their occupied territories.

He called for settling pending issues which stall the progress of security, stability, cooperation and development in the region, adding that among these issues is the recession of the Middle East peace process due to Israel's intransigence and its violation of the principles established in Madrid.

Bin Ali also received yesterday Farouk Qaddoumi, the head of the political department of the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

After the meeting, Qaddoumi said his meeting with Bin Ali was fruitful and that the Palestinian issue was and will always remain among Tunis' priorities and capture the attention of president Ben Ali.

Qaddoumi added, "Tunis plays an important role for the good of the Palestinian issue."

Qaddoumi added that president Bin Ali expressed concern over the latest developments in the Palestinian arena and emphasized the need for Arab coordination in addressing the Palestinian issue.
