Algerian gunmen killed
Algeria-Morocco, Local, 8/28/1998

Algerian dailies published on Thursday said that 10 Algerian gunmen and one soldier were killed during acts of violence carried out in several Algerian areas.

The papers added that six gunmen were killed on Wednesday in and attack launched by the Algerian security forces in Werad Buwail district near Greizan in western Algeria. Weapons were confiscated.

Two other gunmen were killed on the same day night near Beir Khadem, south of the capital Algiers, and other two gunmen in Daleiz, east of Algiers.

Also reportedly, one soldier was killed and another wounded in a bomb explosion when their vehicle passed a site called Bu Arafeh in al-Naemeh district near the border with Morocco.

Early in the week, Algerian dailies said that six Algerian border guards were killed on Sunday night in an ambush implanted by the Armed Islamic Group near the borders with Morocco, expected to have leaked from the Moroccan territories.

The papers also said that the armed group working under the leadership of the renowned "al-Jazzar" from the city of al-Beid is thought to be responsible for attack, and the group is thought to have withdrawn into Moroccan territory. Several months earlier, the Algerian papers said that al-Jazzar's group, which comprises five persons, fled to Morocco after carrying out an attack in Ein al-Safra.

Morocco has categorically denied these reports, and had said that these reports are meant to increase tension between the two states. Moroccan Prime Minister Abdul Rahman Youssoufi has called for dialog to resolve the problems between Algeria and Morocco which have closed borders.
