UN reduces humanitarian program in Iraq
Iraq, Economics, 8/27/1998

Spokesman for the UN John Melees on Tuesday said that the UN is currently obliged to reduce its humanitarian program which falls in the course "oil for food " agreement in main sectors in Iraq because of deteriorated revenues expected from selling Iraqi oil.

He added "Enough sums can not be ensured to finance set projects on improving the sector of electricity and storing water." He continued that minimizing expenditures has become very necessary due to the reduction in the price of Iraqi oil and the inability of Iraq to produce the amount of oil permitted by the UN due to deteriorated oil related infrastructure.

Meantime, the UN Human Rights branch committee in Geneva expressed concern over the "great sufferings of the Iraqi people especially children" as a result of the imposed UN sanctions. The 24 member UN independent experts adopted a decision through which they "appealed the international community especially the UN to lift the embargo measures which affect the humanitarian conditions of the Iraqi people.
