Algerian capital in shock
Algeria, Local, 8/27/1998

Algerian dailies issued on Wednesday expressed wonder that a shelter for terrorists was discovered just under the "Jinan al-Meithaq" complex, one of the state's main headquarters for receiving foreign delegations, following the assassination of five Algerian youths last Sunday by an armed Algerian gunmen.

The Algerian daily "Liberty" under the title "The Algerian capital under shock" and "Assassination under Jinan al-Meithaq" said that the security forces could not get the bodies out until after destroying a door leading to a tube located under the headquarters.

Meanwhile, the Algerian daily "al-Watan" regretted that the government "has not closed the tunnel, which is very close to a location guarded continuously by the government.

During the funeral of the five youths, the Algerian people did not conceal their outrage. An old woman said, "The terrorists were hidden under their feet (in remarks to the authorities), and they did not notice them." The five youths, went to a small untrodden wood near a public garden named "Saint Rafael" overlooking the Gulf of Algiers.

Sources expected that the youths saw in their trip the small tunnel which they got into, not knowing an Islamic armed group was using it as a shelter. Three of the youths were slaughtered and the other two were shot.
