Lebanon-Israel, Military, 8/27/1998
The Lebanese national resistance on Wednesday carried out several attacks against the Israeli occupation positions in the Western and central sectors, Nabatieh and al-Tuffah district.
In a statement, the resistance said, that groups of its resistance men ambushed Israeli military forces in the areas of al-Radar, Hardoun,, al-Qseir, Beaufort, al-Salaa, and Sujoud. Direct hits were scored on positions. The attacks also targeted a pro-Israeli Lahd militia position in al-Qantara area where the Lebanese resistance men clashed with the guards.
Lahd militia sources admitted the killing of one of the militiamen in the resistance attack against al-Qantar position. Lahd militia radio said that one of the two militia men, wounded on Tuesday during a resistance attack on Toumat Neiha area, died on Wednesday.
Earlier reports said the Israeli occupation forces on Tuesday night bombarded several towns and villages adjacent to the occupied part of South Lebanon, especially in the Western and central sectors. Lebanese security sources said the Israeli bombardment targeted al-Hajir valley outskirts of Barachit, Eita al-Jabal, Haris, al-Zaatar mount, Safad, al-Bateikh, Qabriha, and al-Sawnnah. The bombardment also covered the outskirts of Zibqin, and the woods of Mariamin and al-Mansouri in the Western sector.
The sources added that one Lebanese civilian was wounded as a result of the enemy bombardment on al-Sawanneh town. The Israeli helicopters flew over the region and dropped thermal balloons landing shortly afterwards nearby an Israeli occupation troops position. This position, near the Lebanese, Palestinian border was the subject of attack by resistance men last night.
Lebanese security sources said that the Israeli artillery pounded the areas of Qabriha, alGhandorich, Wadi al-Qisieh, Majdal Sulum, Majdal Zoun and al-Mansouri in the central and western sectors. Some 40 shells were dropped on the targeted areas. Further reports from South Lebanon said the positions of the Irish contingent working within UNIFIL in South Lebanon have been exposed to Israeli shell fire. Lebanese security sources said the Israeli shells fell only meters away from the Irish forces positions in Safad al-Batiekh and Barachit where these forces evacuated their positions. Alarm whistles were heard in their positions in Safad, al-Bateikh, Barachit, Eita al-Jabal Hadatha and Haris.
The sources added the deterrent forces within UNIFIL had armored patrols during night times in areas exposed to the Israeli bombardment.
