Dissentions inside Islamic Renaissance Party in Algeria
Algeria, Local, 8/27/1998
In a severe political crisis that threatens the future of the Islamic Renaissance Party in Algeria, party leader Sheikh Abdallah Djaballah announced yesterday that the party would convene a new general conference in October.
He also threatened to freeze the membership of the secretary-general of the party and some members of the national bureau, whom he accused of attempting to split the party from within.
On the other hand, the national bureau of the party laid the complete responsibility on Djaballah for the state of the party. It also described his call for convening an exceptional conference as illegal, a dangerous sign, and exceeding the resolutions of the consultation council.
Algerian official sources said, "The government has nothing to do with this crisis," adding that this is an internal matter within the party, which has the legal and constitutional legitimacy to work in Algeria.
