Iranian president confers with Lebanese Mufti
Lebanon-Iran, Politics, 8/25/1998

Iranian President Muhammad Khatami today received Lebanese Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Rashid Qabbani, currently visiting Iran. Talks dealt with the situation in Lebanon and the continued Israeli aggressions against south Lebanon.

The Iranian President stressed that supporting Lebanon in confrontation of the Israeli occupation is an Islamic and humanitarian duty. He stressed Iran's position in support of the national resistance's efforts to liberate Lebanon's occupied territories.

For his part Sheikh Qabbani spoke about the latest conditions in Lebanon. He stressed the need for coordination between the Arab states and Iran. Such coordination, he said is very important in backing Lebanon's resistance against the Israeli occupation and for maintaining the unity of the Islamic world in confrontation of challenges imposed on the Middle East and the Islamic world as a whole.
