Sudanese south council threatens resignation
Sudan, Politics, 8/24/1998
Members of the South Sudan Coordination Council threatened to present their resignations over the marginalization of the council by officials in the government.
They denounced deducting a part of the council's budget without consulting its members, demanding an investigation of the issue of distributing the foodstuffs, sent to help the needy in the famine area of south Sudan.
The closed meeting of the council on Friday under the chairmanship of Riak Mashar dealt with taking decisive decisions, as the council stated that it was being exposed to marginalization by some governmental officials.
The meeting denounced what it called "working from behind the council" and taking essential decisions which are the council's concern.
The council opposed the deduction of 500 million Sudanese pounds, which the Ministry of Finance decided to pay to the council to combat the famine in Bahr El-Ghazal province and another 500 Sudanese pounds to counter the effects of the civil war in El-Wehda province.
