Arab League condemns Washington's attack against Sudan
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 8/24/1998

The Arab League condemned Monday in Cairo at an emergency meeting the US missile strikes against a pharmaceutical plant in northern Khartoum.

A resolution adopted by the 22 permanent delegates to the pan-Arab organization condemned as an aggression against Sudan the U.S. shelling of Al-Chifaa plant for pharmaceutical products.

The Sudanese deputy at the Arab League, Ahmed Abdul Halim, had informed Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid about the recent US military strike against his country.

The Sudanese ambassador stated, "What was done by the U.S.A comes outside what it has always alleged regarding its regard to international security, human rights and international law."

He also said that the Arab states condemn the terrorist attacks against the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, adding that the Arab League is the first group in the world to approve an agreement for combating terrorism, but said this terrorism should not come from the biggest power in the world.

The Arab League further called on the United States to "respect international law and cease similar acts that ignite feelings of indignation among people and encourage violence and counter-violence."

The US raided last Thursday Al-Chifaa plant in Northern Khartoum, alleging it was making chemical weapons, as well as areas in Afghanistan, claiming they are terrorist strongholds.

The emergency meeting was held at Khartoum's request and chaired by the delegate of Sudan which is currently holding the rotating chairmanship of the AL ministerial council.

The Arab League had denounced the U.S. missile strikes against Sudan and Afghanistan as a "threat to security and stability" in the Middle East saying such raids do not put an end to the problem of international terrorism.
