Mubarak urges Clinton to salvage Middle East peace
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 8/21/1998

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday sent a cable to President Bill Clinton, urging Washington to gear up its efforts for salvaging the Middle East peace process.

In his message, the Egyptian president indicated the intransigence of the Israeli government and its violation of signed agreements reached on all tracks. He warned against the continuity of the current Israeli policy and its grave consequences on Middle East security and stability.

Earlier in the day, President Mubarak received US Senator Chuck Hagel, a member of the foreign relations committee at the US Senate. Following the meeting Hagel said he discussed with President Mubarak the current crisis the Middle East peace process faces.

Hagel expressed his country's concern over not achieving progress in the Middle East peace process. He also warned against the grave consequences of collapse in the Middle East peace process.
