US kept advance intelligence information on Iran from Israel
Israel-Iran-USA, Politics, 8/20/1998
Unlike in the past, the US lately did not provide Israel with advance intelligence information about Iran's intention to test its medium-range Shehab missile last month, Israeli sources said Wednesday.
Citing a reliable intelligence source, HAARETZ Hebrew daily said the disclosure contradicted earlier assumptions that suggested that both Israel and the US were surprised by the Iranian missile test. The reason for not passing the advance intelligence information on to Israel, the source said, was to prevent Israel from carrying out any operation to disrupt the test.
The other reason, the source noted, was the lack of intimacy between the US Administration and Israel in general and between US President Bill Clinton and Israeli prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu in particular. Israel, the source said, should take a grave view of the US attitude, which could characterize future tendencies and intentions.
