Death rate of Sudan famine victims down to 15 cases daily
Sudan, Politics, 8/20/1998

The Sudanese minister of state at the Ministry of Social Planning, Hassan Osman Dahwa, announced yesterday that the rate of Sudanese coming from the "rebel regions" to Wau city in south Sudan to seek humanitarian aid has tapered to approximately 150 persons daily.

The minister also said that the death rate has been reduced to 15 persons daily. Previous reports put the death rate at 70 persons per day.

After his visit to the Bahr El-Gazal region, with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs for the Sudan, Tom Eric Vraalsen, Dahwa said in press statements that the delegation was assured of progress in the health situation in Wau city, and called for exerting Sudanese, foreign, official and popular efforts to help those who are still suffering in the Sudanese south.

Vraalsen left Sudan from Wau heading to Kenya where he will follow up on the rescue operations for the famine victims in south Sudan.
