One Israeli soldier killed, three wounded in south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 8/20/1998

The Lebanese resistance on Wednesday afternoon ambushed an Israeli armored patrol in the occupied part of south Lebanon. The attack resulted in the death of one Israeli soldier and injuries to three others, according to Lebanese security officials.

The officials added that the Lebanese resistance men fired anti tank Sagger missiles and set off a roadside bomb as the patrol passed near al-Rayhan village, 10 km north of the city of Majoyoun in the occupied part of south Lebanon. Lebanese resistance sources added that the Israeli soldier was killed and three others wounded in the attack, adding that an Israeli helicopter was seen evacuating casualties from the scene.

Further reports said the Israeli occupation forces escalated their attacks against areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon and its western Bekaa. Lebanese security sources said the Israeli artillery bombardment concentrated on the hills around al-Tuffah district. The bombardment of Jarjou' town resulted in a fire that destroyed the car of citizen Ali Jamil Muqallid and damaged the house of Mahmoud Muqallid.

The Israeli bombardment also targeted the areas of Ein Qana, Ein Buswar, Lweiseh, Aqmata farm, Safi mount, al-Zahrani river course, Sujoud al-Rayhan woods and al-Habra district located between Zouter East and Yahmur. The bombardment was accompanied by mopping-up operations.

In the western Bekaa, several 155 mm shells were fired into the Ein al-Tineh hills.

Meanwhile, a Polish UNIFIL peace-keeper was wounded by shelling in south Lebanon on Wednesday, according to a UN spokesman. He added that the Polish sergeant in UNIFIL was lightly injured in the leg while driving in an area north of Israel's south Lebanon occupation zone. The spokesman added that the soldier was immediately flown by helicopter to hospital in Naqoura inside the occupied part of south Lebanon.

A total of 222 UNIFIL troops have been killed so far in south Lebanon since its 4,470-member force was established in 1978. Some 89 died in action, the rest in accidents. UNIFIL includes troops from Finland, France, Fiji, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Nepal, Norway and Poland.
