OIC calls for salvaging Middle East peace
Regional-Israel, Politics, 8/19/1998
The Organization of the Islamic Conference has called upon the international community to shoulder its responsibility in salvaging the Middle East peace process from collapse, by pressuring Israel to abide by international legitimacy resolutions and the basics of the peace process established in Madrid.
In a statement released today in Jeddah at the headquarters of the OIC on the occasion of the anniversary of Israel's burning of al-Aqsa mosque, OIC Secretary-General Ezzeddine al-Iraqi said the holy city is now passing its most drastic conditions because of the denunciation of the Israeli government to international legitimacy resolutions, its violation of carrying out agreements and obligations and defiance of the will of the international community.
In its statement, the organization stressed that the Israeli decision to expand the boundaries of Jerusalem is a completion of the Israeli schemes aiming at Judaizing the city and changing its historic and religious traits, a matter which constitutes the strongest evidence on the intention of the aggressive Israeli government towards the peace process.
