Jordanian Cabinet to undergo reshuffling
Jordan, Politics, 8/19/1998

A Jordanian minister in the government of Premier Abdul Salam al-Majali has said that there is inclination towards making a large-scale ministerial reshuffle.

He added that such a process will cover between 7 and 12 ministers on the grounds of the current crisis Jordan witnesses, concerning the economic condition, the question of polluted waters and the public freedoms cause.

Jordan is currently suffering a water shortage due to poor water conditions and mismanagement that resulted in undrinkable water for city dwellers. Also, recently, it came to light that economic data figures that showed a strong economy was in fact false either due to incompetence or outright falsification of the numbers. This is at a time when Jordan is facing an unpopular law that severely restrict freedom of the press.

The Jordanian minister, who declined to be identified, added in a statement to the Jordanian daily al-Doustour published on Tuesday that al-Majali will make the second ministerial reshuffle in his government and will complete his government's programs as planned by a new team of ministers or experienced people. He added that the reshuffle will target the economic team.

Jordan's Baath Party stressed that any new government should propose a national program able to deal with the economic and water crises, and extend bridges to Arab states. To this end, the assistant secretary general of the progressive Arab Baath Party in Jordan, Fuad Dabbour, said, "We want a government that commits itself to the cause of the homeland and the society and to give top priority to special relations with Arab brothers for serving the interests of the Arab nation."

For his part, secretary of the constitutional Jordanian Arab front Mulhim al-Tel called for a government that shoulders the responsibility for what Jordan has been exposed to on the internal, Arab and international levels, for serving Arab causes and achieve a just and comprehensive peace.

Meanwhile, Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Salam al-Majali today received the report concerning the case of the polluted water investigation committee in Amman. The case caused the resignation of the Jordanian minister of water and irrigation, Munzir Haddadin.

This was expressed during al-Majali's meeting with the secretary general of the Jordanian ministry of justice, Eid Lawzi -- the chairman of the investigation committee -- and the committee's members.
