Cairo: secretary-general of Egyptian Human Rights Organization detained
Egypt, Local, 8/19/1998
The Egyptian police detained yesterday evening, the secretary general of the Egyptian Human Rights Organization for four hours.
The secretary general of the organization, Hafez Abu Seada said, "The detention may be because of the report issued by the organization about the situation in the Egyptian prisons."
Abu Seada told ArabicNews.com after his release, that he was visiting his mother in the Tora area south of Cairo, when he was surprised by security forces who arrested him and detained him at El-Maadi police station without giving a reason.
He added, "I was surprised when the officers asked me to pay 1,760 pounds in advance of issuing a judgment against me because of commercial project," adding that he knows nothing about this, and that this must be a case of mistaken identity and that the name of the man the security forces actually wanted must be similar to his.
