Dead Muslims can rest in peace in Berne
Regional, Religion, 8/18/1998
Muslims settled in Berne, Switzerland, can finally bury their dead relatives in a Muslim cemetery that respects the teachings of Islam after authorities of the Swiss federal capital authorized the allocation of land for a Muslim cemetery.
For the first time in Switzerland, the legislative body of the city announced that it accepts modifying its law on cemeteries and allows religious minorities to be buried according to their own rites.
The 2,500 Muslims living in the city can at last bury their relatives according to Muslim rites and, above all, once for all.
Berne is the first city to set the example in a controversial matter, as Muslim communities do not understand that the country's authorities continue to be unwilling to meet one of their most legitimate requests.
The only space allotted to dead Muslims was located in Geneva and only accepted the bodies of persons who were living in Geneva.
