Libya calls for Shayler to be extradited to Libya
Libya, Politics, 8/18/1998
The Libyan government called yesterday on France to extradite an ex-officer in the British intelligence, David Shayler, and allow Libya to interrogate him concerning a failed assassination attempt against Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.
The Libyan news agency stated that the Libyan Foreign Ministry conveyed the request to the charge d'affairs at the French embassy in Tripoli, who was summoned to the ministry in addition to other officials from countries holding permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council.
In statements published by the newspaper the Guardian and the New York Times, Shayler, a former British intelligence agent who was arrested at the beginning of the current month in France, accused British intelligence agents of planning to place a bomb under a car they believed would carry the Libyan president in February 1990. However, Shayler said the bomb was placed under the wrong car and innocent people were killed in the explosion.
While London denied Shayler's statements and demanded that Shayler be delivered for trial for breaching the Official Secrets Act concerned with the confidentiality of official information.
