Sudan warns of Eritrean aggression against Sudan soon
Sudan, Politics, 8/17/1998
Sudan warned today of Eritrean attacks against border villages. Brigadier General Mohammed Ali Abdallah, the deputy ruler of Casla near the Eritrean border, said he expected an escalation along the eastern front.
Abdallah said in press statements today in Casla that "the failure of the negotiations between the government and the southern rebels in Addis Ababa at the beginning of the current month will lead to an escalation of the military stance on the fighting front for the pressure on the government."
He added, "We expect a severe attack from Eritrea and mercenaries on our eastern borders," emphasizing that governmental forces are ready to "retaliate on any aggression against its territories."
He said the province's government is implementing a security and political plan to clear the area from the agents with the participation of public leadership from the mayors."
He also urged the presentation of aid to 60,000 persons who he said were forced to leave the area due to repeated attacks on the borders.
