Libya questions Britain about Gaddafi assassination attempt
Libya, Politics, 8/17/1998

The Libyan people's general committee for foreign relations and cooperation called upon the British government to open a separate investigation on disclosures by former British intelligence officer David Schayler which said that British intelligence in 1996 made a failed attempt to assassinate Gaddafi through a member of a Libyan terrorist group whose headquarters is in London.

In a statement, the Libyan secretariat stressed called on Britain to cooperate in order to hand over wanted terrorists so as to prove its good intentions and non-involvement in this conspiracy. The statement said that Libya will publish information to prove the involvement of British intelligence in Libya's internal affairs, adding that Libya would reserve its right to defend itself and try the British government at the proper time.

The statement noted that arresting Schayler in Paris while he was about to broadcast the information from Paris via the Internet proves that the story of Schayler is accurate.

In its statement, the secretariat said this British attitude does not only contradict UN resolutions, rather it is considered a violation of international law principles and charters against practicing state-run terrorism.
